Washington State has been a leader among the fifty states in protecting and enhancing the environment. Among significant accomplishments involving the state, its people and organizations are the following:
- The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was authorized by President Richard M. Nixon in 1970, largely at the urging of former Washington State resident John Ehrlichman who was then serving on the White House staff.
- Long-time Washington State resident William D. Ruckelshaus was the first EPA Administrator (1970-73 under President Nixon) and also the fifth EPA Administrator (1983-85 under President Reagan).
- U.S. Senator Henry M. Scoop Jackson from Washington State wrote the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and sponsored legislation that preserved Olympic and North Cascades National Parks and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
- The Washington State Department of Ecology (WDOE), established in 1970, was the first comprehensive state environmental agency in the US.
- The Washington Environmental Industry Association (WEIA), founded in 1990, was the nation's first statewide environmental business association.
- The Northwest Environmental Business Council (NEBC), created in 1996 by the environmental industry associations of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, was the nation's first regional environmental business council. It also is the nation's largest.
- The Environmental Services Directory for Washington State, first published in 1990, has been on the Internet since 2001 and is consistently top ranked in online searches for environmental services in Washington State.
